Can my dog wear dog
bows, and what kind should I purchase?
Any dog with long hair on top of the head can wear a topknot. Any
dog with long hair either on top of the head or somewhere around the ears
(like Cocker Spaniel, Poodles, Shih Tzu) can wear ear bows. Breeds that
wear bows can be Poodle, Shih Tzu, Bichon Frise, Yorkie, Westie, Maltese,
Lowchen, Havanese, Lhasa Apso, Sheltie, Pomeranian, Cocker Spaniel, Japanese
Chin, Papillon, Chinese Crested, etc......
What is the
difference between a topknot, double topknot, ear bows and pigtail bows?
A topknot bow is a single unique bow designed to be worn directly
in front of head between the ears. Double topknots are two matching bows
(very small under 1") designed to be worn side by side right on top of
the head between the ears. Ear bows are two matching bows (generally over
1") designed to be worn at the top inside edge of each ear such as you
see flanking either side of a Poodle's topknot. Pigtail bows are two matching
bows designed to be worn lower down on the ear such as on a Cocker Spaniel
or for breeds with long hair on the ears you can literally make a pigtail
(either braided or plain) just as you would for a young girl and tie the
bow around the bottoms of the ear.
How do I make
a topknot and attach the bow?
Each bow will come with 1 or 2 super tiny 1/4" latex rubber bands.
Some of our super styles may come attached with a 3/8" black band, and
the generic bows all have a 3/8" or larger band attached. Please see our
latex band page on how to make a perfect topknot either single or double.
However, to attach ear bows or pigtail bows simply pull up a very small
amount of hair at the base of where you want the bow to be and use the
rubber band to wrap around the hair attaching the bow to the hair just
exactly like you would put a pony tail in a young girl's hair.
How are the bows made,
and what are they made out of?
Generic bows are made from waterproof acetate floral ribbon in various
sizes.
Everyday and Super Fancy bows are made from satin, velvet,
fabric and other fancy ribbon materials.
Show bows are made almost exclusively with Grosgrain or Satin ribbon,
an exception would be some of our very tiny vintage ribbons we use to make
some of the smaller show bows. Please know that due to the nature of this
item being handmade for every order, we have a no return policy.
Occassionally items may not be available or may have to be substituted.
We cannot guarantee every bow will be exactly as pictured, since these
are handmade and ribbon styles/items may change.
Do you have a store where
I can purchase some bows or other items?
We do have a store where you can purchase many of the other items
we make or even purchase and pick up the "show bow sets" however because
all bow orders are custom made, you cannot just walk in and go to an assortment
bin and choose the styles you like best. We do make custom orders in custom
colors and you can pay for an order and come in to pick it up.
What sizes are the
bows?
Generic bows are 1 1/2" wide x 1 1/2" long
Everyday and Super Fancy bows are custom made for the size of your
dog. Generally between 7/8"-1 1/4" wide of varying widths or 1 1/4"-1 3/4"
x varying widths
Show bows come in 3 basic sizes 3/8" x 7/8", 5/8" x 1 1/4", 7/8
x 1 1/2"
What size bow should I get for my dog?
Check
the size chart
Generally the average pet owner orders a size too small for what
they had in mind. A Maltese wears TWO bows side by side in a show ring
so these bows must be exceptionally tiny. However you may only want your
Maltese to wear a single bow in which case the tiny toy bows may be too
small. A Yorkie will generally only wear one bow and a Shih Tzu also
one bow. The average show Maltese is about 4 lbs or less so you need to
keep in mind that your Maltese may be bigger than average, and may require
a larger sized bow. As a general rule:
Maltese order tiny toy bows (under 1") if using double topknots,
regular bows (over 1 1/4")for single topknots
Shih Tzu almost always should wear over 1 1/4" bows
Yorkie if under 4 lbs possibly the tiny toy over 4 lbs definitely
the bigger 1 1/4" bows
Poodle toy for topknots under 5 lbs get the tiny toy, over 4 lbs
get the 1 1/4" or get the 1 1/4" ear bows for any size poodle from toy
to standard
Most other breeds will use the over 1 1/4" bows.
How long will each
bow last?
Show bows are designed to be used only two days per week or for
holidays/special occassions/dog shows, not everyday. They are, however,
very sturdy and will last a long time. Everyday bows are meant to be used
for several days in a row and then discarded. They are not designed for
multiple use, but should last an average of 5-7 days depending on the activity
level of your dog. My Brother's dog is wearing everyday valentine's bows
that still look great and have already lasted 2 wks.
Can I choose if I want
single or double loops for my show bows and the style of backing cuts or
different center items?
Absolutely, we encourage it! For example you like this bow :
but you'd rather have 3 pearl beads instead of Mickey Mouse and a black
back. Just put that information in the comments box of your order blank
or email me after placing your order.
When I click
on some of the pages my computer locks up?
This is a very common problem with users of AOL. There is only one
way I know to fix the problem and that is to contact AOL to find out how
to change the settings on your browser to allow more bandwidth from the
server. You can also try using "netscape navigator" instead of using the
Aol browser window.
How long will it
take for my bows to arrive?
All bows are handmade individually. We do not have the bows made
up in a warehouse or office where we just grab a handful, box them and
ship. We read each order, ask questions if necessary and then carefully
make each bow. Some of the show bow sets may already be made and those
will ship within 2-3 days depending on weekends and holidays. Other bows
take 5-14 days for shipment depending on how many are ordered. Latex bands
usually ship in 2-3 days unless ordered with bows.
How will
my bows be shipped?
We give you the option of first class/priority mail. Obviously first
class will be the least expensive, however it does take 5-10 days to arrive.
Priority mail takes 2-3 days. Large bow orders over $50 will automatically
be shipped via priority mail. Bow orders over $100 will be sent priority
mail insured
How
should my bows look?
Everyday bows should be even on the ends. Ends should not be frayed
and edges should also be even. Show bows should arrive with loops well
formed. Edges should be fray treated and bow should be stiff but not hard
like a rock. Loops should appear as seen here, and should NEVER be flat.
Even if attached to a barrette, loops should be nicely formed. Although
top and bottom loops may vary in size, they should be even side to side.
Are
Dog Bows Safe?
Dog bows are very small and very safe. The only exception would
be using barrettes on "chewing" puppies. It is the user's responsibility
to know whether or not their dog would be able to remove the bow and chew
on it. However even if the dog did remove the bow and chew on it, the likelihood
of a 1" barrette causing problems is small. It was recently pointed out
to me that another bow maker is telling people to never buys bows from
someone that sells feathers or glitter with their bows. Excuse me, but
where is the scientific evidence that either of these items is toxic, or
that either item will blind or maim a dog? It is just not so! With a properly
made bow, the feathers are not going to "fall off" into the eyes, and neither
is the glitter. I've actually accidently blown the glitter into my own
face with no ill effects whatsoever except that I walk around shining like
new diamonds all the time ;-) So, all of our bows are doggy safe, and we
do not use any large objects. The bows are non-toxic, non-flammable and
easy to use. However, we cannot be held responsible for the ingestion or
any damage caused by any part of our bows or barrettes. Proper owner supervision
is the only way to prevent problems.
Please know that due to the nature of this item being handmade for every order, we have a no return policy. Occassionally items may not be available or may have to be substituted. We cannot guarantee every bow will be exactly as pictured, since these are handmade and ribbon styles/items may change.
