If this were a real Yorkie, it would weigh around 4-5 lbs, so I'm going to show you how to make a single topknot, and a double topknot in different size bows. Most people purchase bows too small for their dog whether for cost or not I have no idea, but generally a medium to large bow works best on a 4-5 lbs dog. However when making a double topknot tiny toy bows are best.

Step 1: Start by learning how to brush your dog. Using the slicker brush, part the hair inch by inch and brushing AWAY from the lay off the coat. Brush against the grain, until it is completely free of matts and pulls and each hair is properly seperated.

Step 2: Brush all the hair on the topknot up, parting the hair in a slight diagonal from the outside corner of each eye until the hair is standing up. 

Step 3: Using a small latex band, form a "ponytail" on the top of the head by wrapping your band 2-4 times depending on the size band you are using and the thickness of the coat. Just like a little girl, you must make sure this is not too tight, and that it is not pulled too closely to the head. It should feel "springy". When you tug on it, it should bounce and you should see the hair moving. 

You can also make a little fan on top by catching some of the hair behind the final band wrap or by using another latex band. So your finished topknot can be sticking up or tucked with a little fan top.

  Here you see the "double topknot".  After brushing the hair up, and parting from the corner of the eyes, split the hair down the middle and make "two" topknots just as shown above. 

Step 4 Placing the bow and putting it on straight: In this photo you also can see I have placed 2 bows backward on the 2 topknots. They have not yet been wrapped, but just the band spread and the bow is put on your premade topknot and you can see the "wall" behind the dog. Now, hold the topknot (instructions are the same for 1 bow or 2) and take the bow and pull it straight out toward the wall behind the dog and twist it to the left bringing it around the front and putting it back over the topknot facing forward. This is very important. The bow must be held straight out, then twisted left and then brought around the front and placed back over the topknot. The finished product will look like this:

Of course in this photo you see the double topknot made with tiny toy bows. If you used these bows to make a single topknot they would be too small and make no statement at all. Here is the same dog wearing a single topknot and wearing a 5/8" bow or medium sized single bow. And also the same dog wearing a larger bow considered for "larger dogs" or a bigger 7/8" style topknot.

First, comb the hair and place a latex band at the base, like you would do for a pony tail on your own hair. Then, if you like, bend the hair over and slip on a second latex band toward the bottom of the hair loop and twist  it several times so that it is tight. Sometimes, the hair is not long enough to bend over, and you may have to let it stick up.

After the top knot is set in place, put the bow in the hair. Put the bow in the hair and twist the band only enough times to secure the bow, (probably two times). Do not make it overly tight. If you do, it will be difficult to remove without damaging the bow or the dog’s hair.

To remove the bow, carefully untie the two loops you used to put the bow in, then CUT the other latex bands with a very small pair of scissors. Embroidery scissors are perfect. Never clip the latex bands attached to the bow, and be very careful not to accidently cut the dogs hair. We have latex bands available from only .009 each so really there is no reason you cannot "put up" the top knot daily.

Once the two rubber bands break or wear out it is time to purchase another bow or you can try attaching another band yourself.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT SIZE TO BUY? The size is for YOU, not the dog! What I mean is any of the bands can be used on any size dog. YOU need use what size YOU feel comfortable with. Obviously the smaller the band, the less times it has to be wrapped. Don't let anyone tell you "my bands are small, you only have to wrap them once"NOT. Each dog is different, each dog has different type hair. My "Poo" you see below has very fine hair, not the typical course poodle hair. So I use the 3/16" and still have to wrap it 3 times. My JoJo poodle had thicker hair and I use the 5/16" neon and have to wrap 3 times. There are times when you might have some arthritis etc that you would not want to use the 3/16" bands and would feel more comfortable using the 3/8" larger bands. If your dog has fine hair like my Poo, then I would not suggest the 3/8". If you dog has very thick hair then I would not suggest the 3/16". Otherwise choose the size you feel comfortable using.
